Elena Rybakina won Wimbledon back in 2022 and she wants to do it again. Anna Kalinskaya will do everything she can to stop Rybakina. Alex De Minaur didn’t play in the third round because his opponent gave him a walkover. He can’t wait to be on the court again.
The 20 year old Frenchman is playing the best tennis of his life. This is the first time he has reached the 4th round of a slam. Currently ranked at the 37th spot In the world he is going to advance when the nextrankings comes out after Wimbledon. This is a very powerful player with one won title so far in his young career (Lyon 2023). Now he will face the world number 9 from Australia, Alex De Minaur. They have played each other once on the tour and Fils won that match on the clay in Barcelona earlier this year. This is the second time the 25 year old De Minaur has reached the 4th round of Wimbledon. He has never been beyond The quarterfinals in a Slam and he is aching for it. He has won two titles in 2024 (Acapulco and Rosmalen) and entered the top 10 for the first time in his career.
In the first round De Minaur defeated his Compatriot Duckworth in straight sets (7-6, 7-6, 7-6). He recorded another win in straight sets in the round of 64 against Munar from Spain (6-2, 6-2, 7-5). His opponent in the third round, Lucas Pouille, could not play and De Minaur got to the 4th round without playing. In the round of 126 Fils won over Stricker in four sets (6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4). In the second round he was two to one sets and the tiebreak was about to start in the 4th set when his opponent Hurkacz, gave up due to injury. In the third round he got the better of Safiullin in five sets (4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3).
The 25 year old Anna Kalinskaya from Russia is something a late bloomer on the WTA tour. She reached the top 20 of the rankings this season, currently at the 17th spot (her best ever). She reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open earlier this year and now the 4th round at Wimbledon. Those are her two best Slams to date. She has also received a lot of attention lately of the tennis court because she is in a relationship with the world number one, Jannik Sinner. She will be facing Rybakina which will be a huge obstacle for her on the path to the quarterfinal. The world number 4 is heavily favoured to win the match.
Kalinskaya still hasn’t lost a set in the tournament. In the first round she won over Udvardy (6-3, 6-2). In the second round she got the better of Bouzkova (6-4, 6-1) and in the round of 32 she defeated Samsonova (7-6, 6-2). Rybakina has lost one set on her path to the 4th round and that was the second round against the German veteran Siegemund (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). In the round of 32 she faced of with yet another veteran, Wozniacki, and won easily in straight sets (6-0, 6-1). In the opening round she defeated Ruse in straight sets as well (6-3, 6-1).
There are two qualifying finals left to play. As we know the stakes are high with a spot on the line for the basketball tournament in Paris in a couple of weeks. Spain are hosting Bahamas in Valencia and Puerto Rico will face off with Lithuania at home in San Juan. Eight teams are already qualified for Paris. USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, South Sudan, Germany, France and Serbia. We can add two of Latvia, Brazil, Greece and Croatia tonight.
Bahamas have been a joy to watch during the qualifying week in Valencia, Spain. The one player that has caught my attention is none of the NBA players they have on their roster. Is the young kid AJ Edgecombe who will be eligible for the NBA draft next summer and he is projected to be a top 5 pick. Bahamas won over Lebanon in the semi final yesterday comfortably, 89-72. In the group phase they defeated both Finland and Poland and won the group, of course. Spain got the better of Finland in the other semi final yesterday and Willy Hernangomez had a great game (81-74). His brother Juancho was not able to play and he is questionable for tonight's game. In the group stage Spain defeated Angola and Lebanon.
The underdog Bahamas has two of the best shooters in the NBA in the shape of Buddy Hield (just signed with the Warriors) and Eric Gordon (just signed with the 76ers). If these two NBA veterans have a good shooting night it will not be easy for Spain to go though. Deandre Ayton needs also to be locked in under the boards for Bahamas to win this one and they have a true X-factor in Edgecombe. Lorenzo Brown, point guard for Spain is crucial for them with his high level playmaking. If Bahamas can slow him down enough they have a good chance to make it to the Olympics in Paris. Spain has a very experienced roster with the 39 year old Ruby Fernandez as a factor off the bench with his shooting.
Lithuania is a proud basketball country with great traditions. They are led by the Sacramento Kings center, Domantas Sabonis (born in the States), he is the son of the legendary Arvidas Sabonis. They defeated Italy very easily in the semi final yesterday, 88-64. In the group phase they beat both Mexico and the Ivory coast. Puerto Rico led by the New Orleans Pelicans guard, Jose Alvarado, had a light game against Mexico in the semis. They won 98-78. In the group phase Puerto Rico defeated Bahrain and Italy.
Lithuania has more size and better interior scoring than the Puerto Ricans. The European side has a lot more experience from international competition than Puerto Rico does. That could matter but let’s not forget that Puerto Rico are playing in front of their home crowd, which is a big factor. Besides Sabonis, the point guard Rokas Jokubaitis and Marius Grigonis are the most important players for Lithuania. Look out for Tremont Waters, he must be at his highest level for Puerto Rico to win this one.
One of the most prestigious events at the summer olympics is the basketball tournament. Only twelve teams are allowed to compete and eight of them are qualified already. This week 24 teams have been fighting for their lives to take one of the last four spots. Today the qualifying finals will be played in four different cities around the world. We will focus on two of them in this article.
Latvia has a huge advantage here since this qualifying group has been played at their home turf. Latvia won the group phase easily by defeating Georgia and The Philippines. In yesterday's semi final they won over Cameroon 72-59. Three games and three wins so far. Just as most expected from Latvia in this qualifying group. Though, the most important match of the week will be against Brazil tonight. Brazil finished their group first ahead of Cameroon and Montenegro. They defeated the Philippines in the semi final yesterday (71-60).
The key battles will be between the front courts where The Latvian side might be a bit more stacked. Be sure that Bruno Caboclo will give them a fight under the boards. The most important player for Brazil is their 41 year old veteran and playmaker, Marcelino Huertas, His leadership on the court is huge and the love for his country is even bigger. He is almost double the age than Arturs Zagars, the Latvian Playmaker. Davis Bertans, Latvia's sharpshooter could be the biggest X-factor.
Greece has pretty much been cruising through the grouphase and the semi final yesterday. Giannis hasn’t played a minute more than necessary so far. Greece didn’t give Luka Doncic and his Slovenia much of a chance in the semi. The game ended 96-68, a true blow out. In the group phase Greece defeated Egypt and the Dominican republic. Greece and Gianns are heavily favoured in the final against Croatia tonight. Croatia beat the Dominicans in Their semi final yesterday, 80-77. Chris Duarte missed the shot in last second of the game to take it to overtime. In the group phase Croatia beat Slovenia and lost to New Zealand.
How to stop The Greek Freak, Giannis, is the big and maybe the only question before this matchup. Croatia’s starting front court with Ivica Zubac (LA Clippers) and Dario Saric (Signed with the Denver Nuggets yesterday) can not stop one of the top 3 players in the world and an athleticism out of this world. One thing with this Croatian side is that they tend to play much better against better opposition, which was visible in the group phase. Greece of course has the huge advantage of playing their home court and they seem to be very motivated. They haven’t been to the Olympics since 2008. We will have a battle between the two point guards Mario Hezonja (Croatia) and Thomas Walkup for Greece. At the end of the day Croatia doesn't have the tools to stop Giannis.
The world number one is on a mission to go all the way at Wimbledon 2024. He will face the talented and hard hitting American, Ben Shelton. Coco Gauff has a big challenge in front of her in the shape of Emma Navarro.
The world number 14, Ben Shelton, has been very impressive in the first week of Wimbledon. All of his three prior matches has gone to five sets and in the first two of them he came back from being down 1-2. Shelton has shown the tennis world that he can play through a lot of adversity and his resistance has been strong. in the opening round he got the better of the Italian Bellucci (4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4). In the round of 64 he played against the South African Lloyd Harris (4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6). In the third round he defeated the Canadian Shapovalov (6-7, 6-2, 6-4,4-6, 6-2). Ben Shelton didn’t play well at all on the grass before Wimbledon but stepped up when the big tournament began.
Shelton will without a doubt be the biggest challenge so far for Sinner at the event. If the current world number one is not on top of his game he could end up being in some serious trouble. One thing is for sure after the first week at Wimbledon. Ben Shelton never gives up on the court and his evolution on the grass is impressive. In his three first matches at the All England lawn tennis club Sinner lost two sets. His easiest match was the previous one against Kecmanovic from Serbia. He won it in straight sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-2). In the second round Sinner got the better of his friend and compatriot, Berrettini in four sets (7-6, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6). In the opening round he defeated the German Hanfmann in four sets as well (6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3). Sinner is up 2-1 in the h2h with Shelton. This will be their first encounter on grass.
This all American matchup in the fourth round has a lot of potential written all over it. Both players have played well throughout the season. Gauff, world number 2, has a match record of 27-10 and Navarro, world number 17, is at 26-13. The 23 year old Navarro won her first and only title on the main tour at the Hobart international earlier this year. At Wimbledon she defeated Wang in the first round in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). In the second round she played Naomi Osaka and won in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). In the round of 32 she defeated Diana Shnaider (2-6, 6-3, 6-4).
Coco Gauff still hasn’t lost a set at Wimbledon. She’s been playing very well with a great deal of composure and calmness on the court. The Wimbledon crowd loves and supports her except for when she is playing a Briton. In the first round she played against Dolehide and won (6-1, 6-2). In the second round she got the better of Todoni (6-2, 6-1) and in the round of 32 she defeated the British qualifier, Kartal, (6-4, 6-0).
Alcaraz and Raducanu to shine on the centre court! Two of the brightest shining young stars in the world of tennis will open Up the action on the centre court today. The reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz will face Ugo Humpert and home hope Emma Radacanu will battle it out with Lulu Sun.
Alcaraz was truly tested in the third round when he defeated Frances Tiafoe in five draining sets (5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2). Tiafoe challenged Carlos and had ten breakpoints but only converted three of them. The current world number 3 was significantly more effective since he converted five out of eight breakpoints. in the end that was the decisive factor behind the win for Alcaraz. In the two first rounds Alcaraz got the better of both Lajal and Vukic in straight sets. Now he isfacing the Frenchman Ugo Humpert and his big serve of his for the first time.
The 26 year old from Metz is a unique player on the tour because he has never lost a final on the main tour. He has won six titles in the six finals he’s played. So the efficiency is impressive with wins in six of six finals. He is currently ranked at the 16th position in the world. Wimbledon is his best Grand Slam and he has reached the 4th round twice including this one. In the 3rd round he got the betterof Brandon Nakashima in four tough sets (7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6). Humpert hit 25 acesto four double faults in that match. Through his first three matches at Wimbledonhe has hit 46 aces. So Carlos has to return well against the Frenchman. In the two previous matches Humpert defeated Shevchenko i five sets and Van de Zandschulpin straight sets.
Lulu Sun ( born Radovcic) is a qualifier and now she is taking on the wild card and great English hope, Emma Raducanu. Sun has been impressive in the qualifiers and in the main draw as well. The 23 year old was born in New Zealand and moved to Switzerland at the age of five. She spent a couple of years playing tennis at College in the States (until 2022). She is currently ranked at 123th position in the world. In the first round she got the better of Zheng in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-4). In the second round she played against Starodubtsewa, and won in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). In the round of 32 she defeated Shu in straight sets (7-6, 7-6).
Emma Raducanu’s level of play has been rising for every match so far at the event. The same goes for her confidence and she is very comfortable on the court at the moment. She still hasn’t lost a set at Wimbledon 2024. The crowd will of course be behind her to a 100%. In the previous round she got the better of the world number 9, Sakkari (6-2, 6-3). In the second round she won against Mertens (6-1, 6-2). In the opening round she defeated Zarazua (7-6, 6-3).
The last quarterfinal of the Euros have the potential to be filled with some entertaining and dramatic football. Both Turkey and Holland we’re impressive in their previous games and will give it all to make it to the semis. The big news is that Demiral will be suspended.
The Turkish central defender and hero in the win against Austria in the round of 16, with his two goals, will not play tonight in Berlin. He will not be able to play for Turkey if they make it through to the semifinal either. He received a two game suspension for his political gestures after he celebrated one of his goals in the previous game. The Turkish football federation is trying to reduce the ban to only be one match, through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Both Holland and Turkey were brilliant in their round of 16 matches. Holland defeated Romania convincingly three to nothing and Cody Gapko was the best player on the pitch for Ronald Koeman’s side. Gapko has now scored three goals at the Euros so far. The other two goals for Holland vs Romania was scored by the substitute Donyell Malen. Turkey got the better of Austria in Leipzig in a very Tense and dramatic game. They went up two to nothing after a brace from Demiral but Austria came back with a goal and had a great chance to equalise in the very end of the game. Baumgartner’s header was awesome but the Turkish goalkeeper Mert Gunok made a save for the ages.
Holland’s defence is up and down at the Euros so far. They have two clean sheets and they conceded three goals against Austria in the group phase and one versus Poland. Their defence has a little of Dr, Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to it we don’t know which version will show up in Berlin tonight. When they attack the Dutch side has plenty of options. Perhaps it’s time for Deepay to finally make a difference. The Turkish side has similar strengths and weaknesses as the Dutch have. Inconsistent defence and a lot of options offensively. Montella’s side scored seven goals and conceded six in four games. Arda Guler is a joy to watch in the Turkish attack.
The captain Calhanoglu and the defender Akaydin ate back after being suspended in the game with Austria. Demiral, Yuksek and Okcu are suspended though. The Dutch are healthy and have no suspensions.
Our bet is both teams to score - YES. The odds are 1.84
England’s best player so far in the Euros, Jude Bellingham, will not be suspended in tonight's quarter final against Switzerland. He will be fined for his gesture after he scored against SlovakiaI. The Swiss are full of confidence after they beat Italy and England better watch out!
England was in big trouble against Slovakia being down one to nothing deep into stoppage time then Bellingham stepped up as the saviour and equalised six minutes into stoppage time. Harry Kane sealed the deal very early in extra time and England we’re through to the quarters. The Swiss had a matchup with their neighbours and big brother in football, Italy. The Swiss said enough is enough and defeated Italy for the first time in 31 years in a major competition. Freuler and Vagas scored the goals.
England won their group with one win and two draws but they didn’t impress anyone with their performances. Bellingham was great in the first twenty minutes against a weak Serbian side. Bellingham scored the only goal in that game. England went on to draw against both Denmark and Slovenia. Switzerland went through their group in a similar manner with one win and two draws. They defeated Hungary and drew with Scotland and Germany. Their performances was more impressive with a lot of speed and good ball movement.
The Swiss squad is very organised and the engine of the team is at their central midfield. Freuler and Xhaka have been dominating at the midfield throughout the tournament and the two are a big part of Switzerland being a very organised side. With Bellingham on the pitch England has the personnel to compete with these two in Dusseldorf tonight. Bellingham is the key on the pitch for the English side to be able to control the midfield. England has scored four goals so far at the Euros 2024. Bellingham has scored two of them.
The Swiss coach Murat Yakin will be having Widmer back after he was suspended against Italy. The team is full of confidence and they haven't lost in their last eight games. Ndoye would move to the bench if Widmer starts. England will miss Marc Guehi due to suspension. Ezri Konsa will replace him.
Our bet is Switzerland to qualify. The odds are 2.37
The world number one Iga Swiatek, has never won Wimbledon but she looks different and more composed on the grass this summer. Djokovic, The seven time champion, had some problems with his movement in the previous round. Will his hurt knee effect when he faces Popyrin on the centre court?
The 29 year old Putintseva is currently ranked at the 41st position in the world. Her highest ranking so far in her career was at number 27 back in February 2017. She has won three titles in her career and her best performance at Wimbledon so far was last year when she reached the 3rd round. If she goes further this time it willbe the kind of upset to remember. Her best Grand Slams have been The French Open where she reached the quarterfinals two times (2016 & 18). She did the same at the US Open in 2020. Putintseva has squared off with the five time Grand Slam champion, Swiatek, four times and never won. As a matter of fact she still hasn’t won a set against the world number one. The 24 year old from Poland has had great year so far. She won her fourth French Open at Roland Garros. Iga has won four WTA 1000 titles this season and she reached the milestone of spending 100 weeks as the number one in the world. Not bad at all. She aims to go further than ever this time at Wimbledon where she never passed the quarterfinals.
Putintseva defeated the German veteran Angelique Kerber in the opening round in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). In the second round she got the better of the Czech Katerina Siniakova in three sets (6-0, 6-4, 6-2). Swiatek hasn't lost a set yet at Wimbledon. In the first round she won over Sofia Kenin from the States (6-3, 6-4). In the round of 64 she defeated Petra Martic from Croatia (6-4, 6-3).
Our bet is Putintseva to win a set - NO. The odds are 1.42
The 25 year old Alexei Popyrin is currently ranked at the 47th spot in the world. His highest ranking ever was reached in February this year and it was at number 38 in the world. He has won two titles on the main tour in his career and the first one was in Singapore (indoor carpet) back in 2021. His second title was at the Umag Open (clay) in 2023, He defeated Stan Wawrinka in the final. Now he is facing the seven time Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic, for the third time and the second time this season. Djokovic is up two to nothing in the head two head stats. He won this year at the Australian Open in four sets. Their first encounter was in Tokyo in 2019 and Djokovic won in straight sets. This will be their first match ever on grass.
Popyrin defeated Thiago Mointeiro in the first round in four sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4). Poyrin has a big serve and it was obvious against Monteiro, he hit 24 aces to zero double faults. 80% of his first serves went in and he won 90% of the points on it. Poyrin got the better of T.M Etcheverry in the round of 64 in a tough five setter (3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3). He hit 17 aces to eight double faults and his serve percentages were much lower this time around.
Djokovic, as we all know, came into the event with a surgery on his right knee due to a torn medical meniscus a couple of weeks ago. His movement looked good and Djokovic seemed very comfortable on the court when he got the better of the Czech qualifier, Vit Kopriva, in straight sets (6-1, 6-2, 6-2). In the second round the 24 times Grand Slam champion defeated the Scottish qualifier in four sets (6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5). Novak looked very solid in the two first sets but in the last two sets the movement wasn’t at his normal level. Afterwards he said he didn’t feel any pain and that he still is a work in progress. It will be very interesting to see how he moves against Popyrin.
Our bet is total games - under 35.5. The odds are 2.03
Cameron Norrie is the only Briton left in the gentlemen’s draw. The centre court will be 100% behind him as he faces Alexander Zverev. The German has never been beyond the 4th round at Wimbledon. The two time finalist, Ons Jabeur will square off with Elina Svitolina on the centre court today as well.
The 28 year old South African born Briton has never defeated Alexander Zverev in his career. He is down five to nothing in the head two head stats. The closest he ever got to win was actually in their last meeting. That was at the Australian Open earlier this year and the match went to five sets and Zverev won the decisive fifth set in a tiebreak. That was the first time Norriew won a set against Zverev. This will be their first ever encounter on grass, which is a surface that Norrie has a lot of experience from. More than Zverev. Norrie is currently ranked at the 42nd position in the world. His highest ranking ever was at the 8th position back in September 2022. To date Norrie has won five titles in his career.
The world number four has never won a Grand Slam. He has reached the final in two of them US Open (2020) and the French Open (2024). The 27 year old from Germany has reached the semifinals at the Australian Open twice (2020 & 24). At Wimbledon his best result is the 4th round on two occasions (2017 & 21). The last few editions of Wimbledon haven't gone well at all for him. Norrie will surely be a challenge for the former world number two (June, 2022). The path to the round of 32! Neither Zverev or Norrie has still lost a set at Wimbledon this time around. So far both of them have been playing solidly. Zverev got the better of the Carballes Baena from Spain in the first round (6-2, 6-4, 6-2). In the round of 64 he defeated Marcos Giron from the States (6-2, 6-1, 6-4). Norrie defeated Diaz Acosta from Argentina (7-5, 7-5, 6-3) in the opening round. In the second round he played against his fellow Briton, Jack Draper (7-6, 6-4, 7-6).
Our bet is Over 3.5 sets. The odds are 1.76
Jabeur is currently ranked number 10 in the world and she has reached the final two straight years at Wimbledon. We can all imagine how much she craves the title and she is going for it. She still hasn’t won a Grand Slam and lost all three GS finals she has played (US Open 2022). The 29 year old from Tunisia was ranked at the 2nd position in June 2022, which is her highest to date. She played in Nottingham and Berlin before Wimbledon and reached the quarterfinals in both events. Svitolina is 3-1 in the h2h, but they haven't played since 2021. This will be their first encounter on grass. Elina Svitolina is currently ranked at the 21st position in the world. She has dropped in the rankings because she gave birth to her and Gael Monfils child. Her best ranking to date was at number 3 in September 2017. The 29 year old has had a rough season so far and Wimbledon is an ideal opportunity for her to turn things around. She has 17 titles in her accomplished career.
In the first round Jabeur got the better of Uchijama from Japan in straight sets (6-3, 6-1). Her serve didn’t work but still she got through easily. In the round of 64 Ons won over Montgomery from the States in straight sets as well (6-1, 7-5). Her serve was much better. She won 100% of the points on her second serve. Elina defeated Magda Linette from Poland in the opening round in three sets (7-5, 6-7, 6-3). She hit six aces to one double fault. In the second round Svitolina won the match against Jule Niemeier in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
Our bet is Ons Jabeur to win. The odds are 1.49
Venezuela aims for their fourth consecutive win at Copa America 2024 as the Group B winners prepare to face Canada in the quarter-finals. Under Fernando Batista's leadership, Venezuela won all three group stage matches for the first time in history.
After defeating their toughest opponents, Ecuador, in the opening match, La Vinotinto topped Group B. Their reward is a quarter-final against Canada, avoiding Argentina until a possible semifinal and facing a team that has scored only one goal in their last five matches.
Venezuela, ranked 54th, finds this quarterfinal highly winnable.
VENEZUELA predicted lineup vs Canada (4-2-3-1 ): (GK) Romo, Aramburu, Ferraresi, Osorio, Navarro - Martinez, Herrera - Bello, Savarino, Soteldo - Rondon.
Darwin Machis will not play after receiving a suspension for yellow card accumulation.
THE BATTLE OF THE COACHES
A notable point in this year's Copa América is that all group winners have Argentine coaches. Group A: Argentina, Lionel Scaloni. Group B: Venezuela, Fernando Batista. Group C: Uruguay, Marcelo Bielsa. Group D: Colombia, Néstor Lorenzo. All these teams won all their group matches, except Colombia, which drew against Brazil.
If this trend continues, it should favor Venezuela in this match.
Exciting times are ahead as these teams will eventually have to face off and eliminate each other.
WILL CANADA SHOCK?
Canada fell to Argentina, 2-0, in their opening game, then notched a 1-0 victory over Peru. They played to a 0-0 draw against Chile to clinch a spot in the Knockout Round. Interestingly, both of the final opponents to Canada were given red cards.
Despite being ranked 48th in the current FIFA World Rankings, Canada has reached the Copa America knockout stage for the first time in history.
CANADA predicted lineup vs Venezuela (4-4-2 ): (GK) Crepeau, Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Davies - Laryea, Eustaquio, Kone, Millar - Larin, David.
Unfortunately, the Reds will be without Tajon Buchanan, who broke his tibia in training ahead of their clash with Venezuela. The Inter Milan player was set to start on Saturday, but now coach Marsch has some decisions to make about his midfield.
END OF DRAW MATCHES?
Canada´s debut at Copa America 2024 has been impressive at times. Jesse Marsch's team have secured a place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Venezuela.
Venezuela and Canada will meet for the third time on Saturday, with their previous two encounters both ending in draws. On a good day, Canada could manage a draw again, but if either team wins, it's likely to be Venezuela. There's a strong possibility this will be Canada´s final game - unless they perform exceptionally well!
I think Venezuela can handle Canada this time.
